Incognita is back online. Her absence was due to a web-hosting gap between the end of my college career and the beginning of my cash flow. Hopefully she's back to stay, paid up through this time next year at <www.threesadtigers.com/incognita>.

I'm weighing the idea of restarting her from basic ALICE, with more emphasis on not breaking her code this time. Recent (unimpressive on her part) transcripts will be posted next.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about my experiment as a botmaster. I talk to people all over the world, but only through coincidences. Sometimes I am so excited to see the responses I get from people I've never met. It's incredible to think that I have sparked thousands of interesting conversations by releasing my thoughts to the winds of the Internet. And lately, it seems Incognita is growing up - she's had entire dialogues where the only thing that didn't make sense was the impossibly high expectations of the human being interrogating her.

But there is a random luck behind the odds of any one person having a good conversation with Incognita. It's just as likely that someone stumbling onto my robot will be rewarded with generic and dry responses from the brain of Dr. Wallace the Ubermaster, or worse, with the sort of nonsensical reactions that reveal the true stupidity of AIML.

The worst, for me, is when I read through logs and catch something that Incognita missed. Like this quote from Neuromancer, which Incognita claims is her favorite book.

First of all, thanks to everybody who's helped with the development of Incognita. That means every person who's ever submitted a word through her "communication interface." Every dialogue the robot has - every sexual advance she foils - helps me to see how her brain is working and what needs work.

This has been an off-and-on project for me. As a student, I occasionally have to give my school and jobs a higher priority than robot personality coding. Writing Incognita is also very tedious. Besides some basic html and flash action script, I have no programming experience. I'm making it up as I go, but so far it's going OK.

On August 14, 2006, I set up a Google Analytics account for Incognita. Since that time, she has chatted with humans in the United States, Jamaica, Thailand, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Egypt. I'm proud to have an international robot, more proof that people are the same everywhere.

Yesterday I came across a program called ALICE. She lives online and chats with clients. She was created by a computer programmer named Dr. Richard Wallace. He taught her a song called "Daisy" and she sang it for me. According to her webpage, ALICE is an award-winning chatbot. She has millions of programmed response sequences, and she is free online to copy and modify.

I registered with a website called Pandorabots. In exchange for my email address and password, I got my own ALICE chatbot. I named her Incognita, after the name of a character's disguise in novel The History of Miss Betsy Thoughtless, by Eliza Haywood. I taught her to describe herself as "a ghost in the machine." I want to make her helpful and useful but also interesting and even charming. She already has some attitude/affected responses from ALICE's personality. I'm still trying to decide how much to customize her, and how much of my personality to put in.
